Mumbai:
Antonio Desouza High School, Byculla was in chaos as the media flashed errant reports about a roof collapsing in the school. "There has been no roof collapse only a part of the railing of a staircase on the first floor collapsed. Students only received minor injuries," clarified a teacher of the school.A teacher on condition of anonymity said that it was announced in the morning that only one stairway instead of two would be accessible for students of all four floors. The architect of the building, responsible for the school building and repairs, Rolin Mendonca told Mid-Day, "There was a large volume of children rushing downstairs for their recess and they lost control and stumbled upon themselves and a railing of the stairs gave away and fell. We have called for structural engineers to check the building and repair it to avoid any such incidents in the future."According to the Byculla police, two students were sent to J J Hospital, while one was taken to Balaji hospital only for examination and were sent home, as they were not grievously injured."The fire brigade rushed to the site only after news channels flashed news about a roof collapse. Parents were panicked and phones went ringing off the hook. The situation was not as grave as it was portrayed to be. All students are now home safe and sound," informed Ganesh Rathod, PI, Byculla police station.Parents who rushed to the school to pick up their children were enraged by the false media reports. One such parent said, "The situation is not bad and doesn't require that much attention. More than any student being injured I think the parents whose BPs are rising would have to be hospitalised soon."
